Choose for your course

Education spans learning science, teaching practice, policy and the history of schooling. Start with the course’s focus rather than assuming one general textbook covers all four. A learning-science book explains how learning may work; teaching and policy books address different questions and contexts.

Suggested reading approach

  1. When reading a claim about learning, identify the learners, setting and evidence behind it. Ask whether the result transfers to another age group or classroom.
  2. For teacher preparation, pair reading with observation, lesson planning or practice when your program requires it. A book cannot replace supervised classroom experience or local licensure requirements.
