Linguistics: study language as a system, not a rulebook

Editorial guidance for university students, with independent learners in mind. This is not an official university reading plan. Check your own syllabus before buying; editions and exercise numbers differ.

Choose for your course

Begin with an introduction that surveys sounds, word structure, syntax, meaning, acquisition and change. Then follow your course into a subfield such as phonetics, grammar, semantics or bilingualism. Linguistics describes and tests patterns in language; it is not simply a guide to “correct” usage.

Suggested reading approach

  1. Treat examples as data: describe the pattern, test it on new examples and note exceptions. Read problem sets actively rather than only highlighting terminology.
  2. For fieldwork or language-specific analysis, document who produced the data, in what context and how it was transcribed. Do not assume one language’s pattern is universal.
