Li Wei (Ed.). (2007). The Bilingualism Reader (2nd ed.). Routledge.
章節概要
本書是一部編選的文集,而不是一部有單一敘述主線的教科書:它彙集了其他作者的22篇研究論文,並以Li Wei撰寫的編者文字作為架構。出版社標明全書592頁,並把結構描述為:在導論「Dimensions of Bilingualism」(第3–22頁)與結尾一章「Methodological Issues in the Study of Bilingualism」(第495–504頁)之間,有三個部分(Sociolinguistic Dimensions of Bilingualism、Linguistic Dimensions of Bilingualism、Psycholinguistic and Neurolinguistic Dimensions of Bilingualism)。前置部分有序言、誌謝與一則「How to Use the Reader」說明;書末有資源清單、術語表、參考書目與索引。每一組文章之後都有一段簡短的「Notes for Students and Instructors」。出版社稱,第2版新增了九章,以及由原文作者結合近年研究評價自己文章的後記,還有修訂過的學習問題與活動、對研究方法的討論,以及內容完整的術語表。
導論:Dimensions of Bilingualism
編者的開篇一章(約20頁)介紹了為三個部分命名的雙語現象的各個面向。
第一部分 Sociolinguistic Dimensions of Bilingualism
第一組文章涉及雙語現象的定義與類型:Charles Ferguson 的「Diglossia」,以及 Joshua Fishman 的兩篇文章,「Bilingualism with and without diglossia; diglossia with and without bilingualism」與「Who speaks what language to whom and when?」。第二組討論語言選擇與雙語互動,包括四篇關於語碼轉換的文章:Jan-Petter Blom 與 John Gumperz 的「Social meaning in linguistic structure: code-switching in Norway」;Carol Myers-Scotton 的「Code-switching as indexical of social negotiations」;Peter Auer 的「The pragmatics of code-switching: a sequential approach」;以及 Li Wei、Lesley Milroy 與 Pong Sin Ching 的「A two-step sociolinguistic analysis of code-switching and language choice: the example of a bilingual Chinese community in Britain」。第三組討論身分認同與意識形態,收有 Monica Heller 的「Code-switching and the politics of language」與 Ben Rampton 的「Language crossing and the problematisation of ethnicity and socialisation」。
第二部分 Linguistic Dimensions of Bilingualism
第二部分轉向語碼轉換的語法與雙語習得。語法方面的文章有 Shana Poplack 的「Sometimes I'll start a sentence in Spanish y termino en español: toward a typology of code-switching」、Carol Myers-Scotton 與 Janice Jake 的「Matching lemmas in a bilingual language competence and production model: evidence from intrasentential code-switching」,以及 Pieter Muysken 的「Code-switching and grammatical theory」。習得方面的文章有 Virginia Volterra 與 Traute Taeschner 的「The acquisition and development of language by bilingual children」、Fred Genesee 的「Early bilingual language development: one language or two?」,以及 Jürgen Meisel 的「Code-switching in young bilingual children: the acquisition of grammatical constraints」。
第三部分 Psycholinguistic and Neurolinguistic Dimensions of Bilingualism
第三部分涉及雙語的產出與感知,收有 David Green 的「Control, activation, and resource」、Kees de Bot 對 Levelt 言語模型的改編、Judith Kroll 與 Annette de Groot 的「Lexical and conceptual memory in the bilingual」,以及 François Grosjean 的「The bilingual's language modes」。最後一組談雙語者的大腦,有 Loraine Obler 等人關於雙語者大腦半球側化的文章、Michel Paradis 的「Language lateralization in bilinguals: enough already」,以及 Jubin Abutalebi、Stefano Cappa 與 Daniela Perani 論述功能性神經影像證據的文章。
結尾:Methodological Issues in the Study of Bilingualism
An Introduction to Sociolinguistics、Holmes 與 Wilson 的 An Introduction to Sociolinguistics,以及 Trudgill 的 Sociolinguistics: An Introduction to Language and Society
- 先讀「How to Use the Reader」與編者的「Dimensions of Bilingualism」。
- 選擇一條線索: 社會語言學課程讀第一部分,語碼轉換語法與兒童雙語現象讀第二部分,心理語言學與雙語者大腦讀第三部分。
- **先讀每組文章後的說明,**再讀文章;遇到不熟悉的術語就查術語表。
- **利用學習問題與後記,**比較原文的主張和後來的看法。
- 最後,在設計研究專題之前讀方法論一章。
