Reading Guide
Who this book is for
For students studying learning within cognitive psychology or a dedicated learning and behaviour course. The modular structure supports a systematic comparison of mechanisms that are often confused in everyday explanation. It is useful for building precise analyses of behaviour, with attention to how a proposed account could be tested rather than merely given a familiar name.
Prerequisites
Introductory psychology and basic understanding of experimental design are recommended. Be able to distinguish a measured response from an explanation and a correlation from evidence about a learning mechanism. No advanced statistics is assumed.
What it covers
Thirteen modules cover the definition and research methods of learning, elicited behaviours, respondent conditioning, operant conditioning, observational learning and their integration. Later modules consider sensation and perception, memory, language and learning concepts. The three central learning models are presented as complementary rather than as an automatic competition with one winner. Definitions, examples and exercises connect concepts with observations.
How to use it
Choose a simple learning scenario and describe the behaviour before interpreting it. Draw the temporal sequence of stimuli, responses and consequences, then test whether classical, operant or observational concepts fit. Specify what evidence would distinguish your explanation from a plausible alternative. Alter one feature of the scenario and predict the result before reading the example’s solution. Use retrieval practice to discriminate easily confused terms, and keep a record of cases where a label sounded convincing but did not actually explain the observed sequence.

The web publication date is May 2021, while the downloadable second-edition file identifies version 2.00 in June 2021; these are versions within the same edition. No unverified ISBN is assigned.
