International relations: distinguish trade exposure from costly dependence
Compare a free global history and two IR surveys, then solve an original interruption-and-adaptation packet without turning trade flows into a leverage claim.
Study route and exercise: University Reading List editorial project.
Who this book is for
For students who want a wider historical starting point for international relations than a narrative beginning with European states. The book supplies accessible regional accounts and prompts comparison of political communities, hierarchies and exchange. It is useful beside a contemporary theory course, while retaining the distinction between historical examples and direct explanations of current policy.
Prerequisites
No advanced international-relations theory is required. Basic map-reading and an interest in world history help. Keep a chronology so that institutions from very different periods are not compared as though they existed simultaneously.
What it covers
The chapters examine international systems in China and East Asia, India, the Muslim caliphates, the Mongol world, Africa and the Americas, followed by European expansion. They encourage attention to interaction among political communities before those communities were incorporated into a European-dominated order. The book makes regional diversity visible without requiring readers to regard every earlier political entity as a modern nation-state.
How to use it
Read the introductory framing, then map one regional system’s actors, routes and forms of authority. Compare it with another chapter using the same questions: who claims authority, what connects communities, and how are disputes managed? Write a short argument about one resemblance and one important difference. Check unfamiliar names and dates and avoid assuming that a present border defines the historical unit under discussion.
