Reading Guide
Who this book is for
For senior undergraduate students who want to connect the equations of physical chemistry with molecular models before moving into graduate study. It is a broad theoretical route rather than a software tutorial. The opening background and later specialist chapters can be read at different stages of a course sequence.
Prerequisites
General chemistry, calculus and elementary linear algebra are useful. Previous physical chemistry helps; the advanced chapters require more mathematical confidence than the opening background material.
What it covers
Quantum foundations and molecular models prepare the reader for the major areas of theoretical chemistry. The later treatment relates molecular structure and change to statistical and dynamical descriptions. This breadth gives the book a distinct role alongside a text devoted specifically to interpreting spectra.
How to use it
Start with a tractable model and identify which physical effects it leaves out. Reproduce a short derivation before checking the worked answer, and note how the approximation affects an observable. Choose one later subject to pursue in depth, returning to the background whenever unfamiliar notation or assumptions interrupt the argument.
Edition and sources
The author site explicitly identifies a free second edition. It is an author-issued online revision after copyright was returned, so this record does not reuse the 2003 Cambridge first-edition year or ISBN. No publication year or ISBN is asserted for this online edition.
