Reading Guide
Who this book is for
For students seeking a regional research route beyond a general archaeology survey. Indonesian and Australian contributors examine different periods and kinds of evidence, making it useful for comparing how archaeological claims are built. The volume provides a substantial baseline for Sulawesi research, not a claim that every later discovery is already included.
Prerequisites
Introductory archaeology and basic understanding of stratigraphy, dating and material evidence are recommended. Familiarity with Island Southeast Asian geography helps. Individual technical analyses may require additional methods reading.
What it covers
Chapters cover past vegetation and climate, caves and open sites, rock art, faunal evidence, Neolithic and later material, trade ceramics and the emergence of political and religious formations. The temporal range connects human presence with environmental and social change. Site studies and regional comparisons show different scales of inference and different relationships between dating results, material distributions and historical interpretations.
How to use it
Choose one site and separate the observations, dating evidence and interpretive claims in its chapter. Sketch the chronological sequence and mark which transitions are directly demonstrated and which remain uncertain. Compare a rock-art or ceramic argument with a chapter using another type of evidence. Explain whether a similarity supports contact, shared practice or merely a descriptive resemblance. Finish by proposing a research question that would refine the regional picture, stating which new evidence would be most informative and why.
Edition and sources
ANU Press published the complete edited volume in November 2018 as Terra Australis 48. The online ISBN is distinct from the print number. The full PDF and individual chapters are free under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, with material-specific notices still applicable. Dates of discoveries and claims about the oldest sites should be read historically and checked against later research before repetition. Official complete reading route.
