Reading Guide
Who this book is for
For advanced undergraduates and beginning graduate students in biomedicine, molecular biology and related fields. The book provides an entry into glycoscience after general biochemistry. It is especially useful when proteins and nucleic acids are familiar but carbohydrate structures still look like disconnected nomenclature.
Prerequisites
Biochemistry, molecular and cell biology, and elementary organic chemistry are recommended. Review stereochemistry, enzyme specificity, membrane trafficking and gene expression before studying glycan pathways.
What it covers
General principles of glycan structure and biosynthesis lead into organismal diversity, glycan-binding proteins, roles in biological systems, disease and analytical methods. The fourth edition expands connections to informatics and other molecular datasets. Clinical examples help explain mechanisms; this is a molecular textbook rather than a general clinical treatment reference.
How to use it
Start with the symbolic representation of one glycan and explain what each linkage implies about structure. Follow a biosynthetic pathway while recording enzyme specificity, cellular location and the consequence of one missing step. Compare a recognition experiment with a biosynthesis experiment so that binding evidence is not confused with causal function. Use the disease chapters only after reconstructing the relevant normal process. Build a short glossary and test your understanding by drawing a pathway from memory.
Edition and sources
The complete authorized fourth edition was published by Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Press in 2022. The book content uses CC BY-NC-ND 4.0; attribution, noncommercial use and the restriction on distributing adaptations matter. Separate identifiers for hardback and epub should not be interchanged.
