Who this book is for

For literature students studying a major twentieth-century poet after an introductory survey. Keane offers a focused account of Yeats’s spiritual and erotic concerns, useful for a modern-literature seminar or an author project. The study complements modernism surveys while preserving Yeats’s Romantic and Petrarchan connections.

Prerequisites

Some experience with close reading of poetry is helpful. Read selected Yeats poems alongside the discussion and be prepared to consult historical or philosophical references without reducing the poem to biography.

What it covers

Two main parts examine Yeats as a spiritual seeker and as a poet of love associated with Maud Gonne. Readings consider the occult, bodily decline, imagination, the Byzantium poems and the tension between spiritual aspirations and embodied life. The second part follows poems and plays in relation to the muse and the traditions through which the poet reshapes unrequited attachment.

How to use it

Read a poem before its commentary and mark an image, a syntactic turn and a change in voice. Write an interpretation using those details. Then compare Keane’s reasoning and ask how much the biographical or intellectual context explains. Test a claim against another poem rather than assuming one pattern governs the whole career. Distinguish the historical person, the poetic speaker and the critic’s account of their relationship.
