Reading Guide

Who this book is for

For lower-division undergraduates studying urban sociology or interdisciplinary urban studies. Its distinctive value is the invitation to read an actual place through several conceptual lenses. Readers who already know a city well can use the activities to question which aspects familiarity has made difficult to notice.

Prerequisites

No geography software or advanced sociological theory is required. You should be willing to look carefully at an ordinary urban place and separate description from inference. A notebook, a map and access to publicly available local information are sufficient for an initial exercise.

What it covers

Thematic chapters examine urban life through concepts, theories and cases from cities around the world. Housing, environment and culture connect physical space to social relations. Review questions consolidate vocabulary while field activities ask readers to apply an argument to a real setting; some can be adapted to remote learning.

How to use it

Select one street, transit stop or public space and record what is visible at different times. Read the related chapter, then distinguish your observations from assumptions about who belongs there. Compare the site with planning documents, housing data or another neighbourhood. Write an account that states the limits of a short visit and considers people whose use of the city your chosen time and route did not capture.
