Reading Guide
Who this book is for
For students who have already encountered Marx and want a focused argument rather than another survey of political economy. Screpanti contests ways of treating abstract labour as a natural substance and develops a social interpretation. Readers should be ready to examine a controversial proposal on its merits and compare it with competing interpretations.
Prerequisites
Know the basic vocabulary of Marxian political economy, including surplus value and the relation between wages and profits. The later formal arguments and appendices benefit from comfort with algebra and input-output reasoning.
What it covers
The chapters move from abstract labour as a supposed natural substance to labour as a historical social relation, then examine subsumption and exploitation, values and prices, and measures of exploitation. The appendices develop formal aspects of reproduction and wage timing. The book connects conceptual interpretation with economic measurement, making the assumptions behind apparently technical results especially important.
How to use it
Outline the competing meanings of abstract labour before following the formal sections. For each model, list its assumptions, quantities and claimed implications. Work through a small numerical example and ask whether changing wage timing or the price system affects the conclusion. Write a comparison that separates objections to Marx’s interpretation, objections to economic assumptions and objections to the mathematics. Use the references to locate an alternative position.
