Design for Learning: Principles, Processes, and Praxis

Jason K. McDonald; Richard E. West (editors)

A free instructional-design textbook connecting learner analysis, problem framing, prototyping and evaluation with design judgment.

Prerequisites

No particular authoring software is required. Familiarity with learning objectives, classroom activities and basic educational research will help. Have access to a small instructional problem that you can investigate; the practical chapters become more demanding when applied to real learners and stakeholders.

Curriculum design: make the goal, task and evidence agree

Compare an open design-project text, backward-design modules and curriculum debate, then solve an original geometry-transfer and alignment packet.

Who this book is for

For education students and beginning instructional designers developing a complete learning experience. It is useful after an introductory teaching course, when you need to explain the reasoning behind a design. Experienced teachers can use selected chapters to examine a weak lesson or an unfamiliar learning environment.

Prerequisites

No particular authoring software is required. Familiarity with learning objectives, classroom activities and basic educational research will help. Have access to a small instructional problem that you can investigate; the practical chapters become more demanding when applied to real learners and stakeholders.

What it covers

The practice section follows understanding, exploring, creating and evaluating. The knowledge section connects learning theory and precedent with systematic and agile processes, curriculum design, media, project relationships and implementation. Its strength is the connection between decisions and context; a sequence of attractive materials alone does not establish educational value.

How to use it

Choose one short learning problem. Interview a potential learner, map the task and write two alternative problem statements. Build a modest prototype before committing to a finished resource. Ask someone to use it, record where the intended activity breaks down, and revise both your design and your assumptions. Keep a decision log showing which observations support each change.

Edition and sources
