Reading Guide
Who this book is for
For undergraduate students beginning a substantial biochemistry sequence after chemistry and biology foundations. The openly readable presentation provides an alternative to a large commercial text and can support systematic review. It is more detailed than a brief general-organic-biological survey, so readers should plan to work through the molecular reasoning rather than only collect pathway names.
Prerequisites
General and organic chemistry, cell biology and basic quantitative reasoning. Review acid-base equilibria, functional groups and chemical energy before working through enzyme and metabolic explanations.
What it covers
Molecular structure and function lead through membranes, catalysis and energy toward metabolism and information processing. The organization connects the behaviour of molecules with the larger tasks a cell performs. Technique material offers a way to ask how a biochemical claim could be tested.
How to use it
Choose one molecule or reaction and relate its structure to its function before memorizing a diagram. For an enzyme example, distinguish the rate effect from the equilibrium position. In a pathway, keep track of carbon, energy carriers and regulation on separate passes. Explain how a perturbation could change the outcome, then identify an experiment that would distinguish your explanation from an alternative.
Edition and sources
The LibreTexts version credits Ahern, Rajagopal and Tan at Oregon State and provides free full text. This record follows that online presentation; it does not import a year, ISBN or revision number from a separate PDF or confuse it with Biochemistry Free and Easy.
