Study route and exercise: University Reading List editorial project.

This is introductory academic study, not an assessment of anyone’s real rights or a route to professional qualification. Learning the Law and Legal Skills concern England and Wales; Martin’s guide concerns US citation practice. The worked problems use only the expressly invented rules of jurisdiction J. No actual legal outcome follows from them. For real coursework, use the assigned jurisdiction, applicable-date sources and current local instructions.

## Choose your starting point

- [ ] I need a free citation reference
Use Martin to learn how a US authority is identified and located. Work with its official examples or a genuine source you can retrieve; pair it with the self-contained practice packet below. It does not supply the institutional and substantive-law coverage of a complete methods text.

- [ ] I am starting an England-and-Wales law degree
Consider the eighteenth Learning the Law for an initial map of study, legal materials and assessment. Read named skill areas selectively, then apply the technique to material prescribed by your course rather than treating a publisher description as current law.

- [ ] I need a more extensive skills workbook
Consider Legal Skills tenth edition if you want sustained practice moving from finding a source to using it in a written answer. Inspect a legitimate sample or library copy before buying. Check Enhanced e-book entitlement separately if you expect the embedded videos or digital exercises.

## Compare the three books

### Introduction to Basic Legal Citation

Peter W. Martin · Online edition, 2026 revision · 2026
Free, US-specific reference

Choose it when: You need to identify a case, statute or other source and make your citation retrievable.
Use another route when: You expect a free general textbook on English courts, statutory interpretation or substantive legal subjects.
Selected reading: Use §§1-200 and 1-600, then 2-200/2-300 for the relevant source type and 6-200 for citation in context.
Limits and trade-offs: The author’s 2026 guide is freely readable but copyrighted. Citation format can vary by court or assignment; correct formatting alone establishes neither binding status nor support for your proposition.

#### Try before choosing

Using the official PDF, select one judicial-opinion example and one statute example. Label the issuing body, source identifier and pinpoint information; retrieve the underlying source where available.
Check your work: Explain what each component helps a reader locate. Do not convert a US example into an England-and-Wales citation by changing punctuation, or claim an unavailable source was read.

### Glanville Williams: Learning the Law

Glanville Williams; Charlotte Harrison (editor); Amanda Millmore (editor) · 18 · 2025
England-and-Wales orientation

Choose it when: You need an accessible first map of legal study before choosing deeper research or writing practice.
Use another route when: You primarily need extensive problem-answer drills or a current practitioner reference for a live dispute.
Selected reading: Find the eighteenth-edition discussions of cases, statutory reading, legal research and problem answering in your copy; no chapter number from an older edition is assumed.
Limits and trade-offs: The UK publisher confirms 2025, 18e, the selected paperback ISBN and jurisdiction. Regional publisher contents lists differ, so match named topics to the contents in your copy. Paper ownership does not establish a separate e-book entitlement.

#### Try before choosing

From the named case/statute and problem-solving discussions, turn the fictional J rule below into a checklist of ordinary and age-dependent conditions. Explain which missing fact would block a definite answer.
Check your work: The checklist distinguishes the effective-date question from the applicant’s conditions. It does not treat an orientation book as authority for J’s invented law.

### Legal Skills

Emily Finch; Stefan Fafinski · 10 · 2025
England-and-Wales practice companion

Choose it when: You want a broad academic/practical skills route with repeated writing and source-use activities.
Use another route when: You only need a short initial orientation or assume all advertised digital extras are public.
Selected reading: Locate the source-finding, source-use, legal reasoning and problem-answering discussions in the tenth edition. Select those before presentations or employment material.
Limits and trade-offs: OUP’s official companion confirms the edition and says the embedded student resources require the Enhanced e-book. The full publisher contents were not accessible in this check, so this guide avoids unverified chapter numbers or a promised free resource bank.

#### Try before choosing

Write a 150-word issue/rule/application/conclusion answer to one J applicant. Then add the strongest possible contrary reading and the exact supplied wording that resolves or leaves it open.
Check your work: Every result connects a rule label and fact. A neat four-part heading cannot compensate for a wrong version, missing condition or unexplained factual assumption.

## Six steps with a concrete output

- [ ] Write a jurisdiction and task card

Selected reading: Read the chosen text’s introduction and scope; Martin§1-600 is a citation-specific supplement.

Make this: State the jurisdiction, question, relevant date and intended reader for a hypothetical academic answer. Name the type of source you need and why.

Check your work: The card does not combine a US citation rule, an English institutional rule and J’s exercise as one legal system.

Your notes:

________________________________

- [ ] Build a source ledger

Selected reading: Use the main text’s research discussion and Martin§1-200 for the purpose of a retrievable citation.

Make this: For each J packet item, record its label, type, issuing body, date, pinpoint and what it can support. Mark the blog as commentary.

Check your work: A source’s existence, apparent authority and substantive support are separate columns; the blog’s confidence is not a status rule.

Your notes:

________________________________

- [ ] Locate the relevant version

Selected reading: Use the main text’s statutory-reading discussion; compare J-C1 and J-C2 below.

Make this: Make a two-row effective-date table and assign each applicant to a version by filing date. Keep factual age separate from the date question.

Check your work: 30 August uses the old rule;2 September uses the substituted rule. No unstated retrospective effect is introduced.

Your notes:

________________________________

- [ ] Extract ordinary and age-dependent conditions

Selected reading: Use the main text’s cases/rules and problem-answering sections.

Make this: Rewrite each version as a checklist, including the under 18 condition and the stipulated age-at-filing interpretation.

Check your work: The training requirement belongs only to the new version. The guardian condition is not silently dropped because the applicant is registered.

Your notes:

________________________________

- [ ] Write an application with a counterargument

Selected reading: Read the chosen skills text’s problem-answering discussion; consult Martin§6-200 only for US citation-context practice.

Make this: Answer for all three invented applicants, cite packet labels, and explain one tempting but wrong shortcut. Label any missing fact rather than inventing it.

Check your work: Each conclusion rests on all applicable conditions. A fictional packet label is not presented as a real court citation or academic source.

Your notes:

________________________________

- [ ] Audit the answer before extending it

Selected reading: Return to the exact supplied rule and the named chapter/section used.

Make this: Swap the answer with a peer or reread it yourself: trace each factual statement, authority claim, date and conditional requirement. Then solve the changed-facts problem below.

Check your work: An independent reader can reconstruct the result. A source that cannot be located or a premise that cannot be justified is marked unresolved rather than hidden.

Your notes:

## Worked exercise: Which version and which conditions apply?

All rules, bodies and applicants here are invented. In jurisdiction J, J-C1§4 applies to requests filed before 1 September 2030: a pass must be issued if and only if the applicant is registered, files a signed request, and—if under 18—has guardian consent. J-C2§2 substitutes §4 for requests filed on or after that date: the same conditions plus a training certificate; a qualified digital signature counts as signed. Stipulated binding decision J-P1 says age is measured at filing. Ana is 17, registered, files a signed request on 30 August, no guardian consent. Ben is 19, registered, files signed on 2 September, no training certificate. Cara is 17, registered, files on 2 September with a qualified digital signature, guardian consent and training certificate. A blog J-N1 says registration alone suffices. Decide only under this packet.

Assumptions: The dates 2030 are part of a fictional teaching model, not a forecast. Treat the listed facts as complete and reliable; only the stated conditions govern, and J-P1 has the binding status expressly assigned here. A pass has no real-world use. Packet labels are invented retrieval keys, not real legal citations.

Your notes:

________________________________

## Change an assumption: An unknown age does not remove a conditional requirement

Keep J-C2 and J-P1, but add invented applicant Dev: registered, files a signed request on 2 September 2030, has a training certificate, has no guardian consent. Dev’s age at filing is unknown. What can be concluded? Then compare two added facts: age 18 at filing, or age 17 at filing but 18 when the application is decided.

## Before moving on

- I can explain the jurisdiction and distinct job of each selected book without treating their citation systems as interchangeable.
- I can trace a conclusion to a versioned rule, a supported fact and an explicit conditional requirement, and state what remains unresolved.
- I can solve the changed-facts problem and say exactly which added fact or changed rule alters the answer.

## Answer and interpretation

### What is the difference between locating and using an authority?

A citation helps identify a source and passage. You still need to check its issuing body, status, relevant date and relation to the question before relying on it.

### Must a beginner already know legal terminology?

No. Start with careful reading and a glossary. Distinguishing a source’s wording from your paraphrase, and a supplied fact from an assumption, is more useful than memorizing case names.

### Can one citation style be carried across jurisdictions?

Do not assume so. Martin is US-focused; the two main skills routes are England-and-Wales-focused. Follow the instructions applicable to the actual task and keep the fictional packet’s labels separate from real citations.

### Which version and which conditions apply?

1. Assign versions first: Ana’s 30 August filing falls under J-C1; Ben and Cara’s 2 September filings fall under substituted J-C2. Age at filing controls under the stipulated J-P1.
2. Ana meets registration and signature but lacks required guardian consent at 17, so the conjunction fails. The later training condition is irrelevant to her filing; adding it would be another error.
3. Ben is 19, so guardian consent is not required, but he lacks the new training certificate. His registration and signature do not cure that missing condition.
4. Cara meets registration, the expressly recognized digital-signature condition, guardian consent and training. At 17 the age-dependent consent requirement matters, but she satisfies it. Under the stated if-and-only-if rule, a pass must be issued in this fictional model.
5. J-N1 is commentary and contradicts the supplied operative conditions. A polished or recent blog does not displace the packet’s stipulated source-status rules.

Under the invented packet, Ana and Ben do not satisfy the applicable issuance conditions; Cara does. Cite J-C1§4/J-P1 for Ana, J-C2§2 for Ben, and J-C2§2/J-P1 for Cara. These are conclusions within a fully stipulated exercise, not findings about actual permits, minors or electronic signatures.

Test the result: Remove one condition at a time from the checklist and see which result changes. If Cara’s signature were merely described as “digital” with qualification unknown, her result would be unresolved rather than automatically allowed or refused.

### Change an assumption: An unknown age does not remove a conditional requirement

1. Under J-C2 registration, signature and training are satisfied, but the guardian condition depends on age. With age unknown, the packet permits both an adult model where consent is unnecessary and a minor model where it is required and missing.
2. If Dev is 18 at filing, the under 18 condition does not apply and all stated requirements are met. If Dev is 17 at filing, the missing consent prevents satisfaction even if Dev later turns 18: J-P1 fixes the relevant age date.
3. Request the missing age-at-filing fact. Do not treat absence of a fact as proof that the applicant is an adult, or replace the stipulated age rule with a real jurisdiction’s rule.

Initially the result is unresolved. Age 18 at filing yields satisfaction; age 17 at filing without consent yields non-satisfaction under the packet, regardless of turning 18 later.

Test the result: Construct both completions of the initially incomplete facts and identify the single condition that changes. If a rule shifting age to the decision date is introduced, label it as a changed rule and recalculate instead of silently applying it.

## Common mistakes

### Mistaking a reference for a full curriculum

Martin supplies a free US citation route. It is not a substitute for all English legal method, institutions or substantive law.

### Treating a correct citation as proof

An accurately formatted reference can point to an outdated version, a nonbinding source or a passage that does not support the sentence.

### Filling a factual gap with a confident conclusion

A short answer should expose an unresolved material fact. Inventing the fact makes the answer neater while making its reasoning less reliable.
