Study route and exercise: University Reading List editorial project.

A control-volume momentum route for steady incompressible flow, with an idealized bend and a symmetric split outlet. Liburdy is an archived open second course, White–Xue ninth edition a quantitative engineering spine, and Lauga a conceptual overview. Loads are net relative to uniform ambient pressure, so gauge-pressure results are not unqualified absolute wall tractions. The examples are stipulated models, not support designs.

## Choose your starting point

- [ ] I already know introductory fluids
Use Liburdy’s free second-course text to connect control-volume preparation with potential and viscous-flow assumptions.

- [ ] I need the quantitative first-course spine
Use White–Xue for integral conservation laws, engineering units and subsequent differential/dimensional analysis.

- [ ] I need physical intuition first
Use Lauga to explain viscosity, pipes and dimensions, with a quantitative textbook for force calculations.

## Compare the three books

### Intermediate Fluid Mechanics

James Liburdy · 2021
Archived free second course

Choose it when: You already know hydrostatics, control volumes, streamlines and basic Navier–Stokes ideas.
Use another route when: You need your first derivation of every conservation law or a continuously updated text.
Selected reading: Introduction and Mathematical Tools, then Bernoulli Equation; later potential/viscous flows as needed.
Limits and trade-offs: Official free reading is CC BY-NC-SA; the publisher marks the work archived. It is not a complete beginner substitute.

#### Try before choosing

Explain why steady flow around a bend can still have nonzero acceleration and force.
Check your work: Zero time accumulation does not eliminate the change in the velocity vector along the flow.

### Fluid Mechanics

Frank M. White; Henry Xue · 9 · 2021
Engineering conservation-law spine

Choose it when: You need to derive forces with explicit control surfaces and units.
Use another route when: You want a short nonmathematical introduction instead of a broad problem-solving course.
Selected reading: Chapter 3 Integral Relations for a Control Volume; Chapters 2, 4 and 5 for pressure, differential relations and dimensions.
Limits and trade-offs: The selected ©2021 ninth-edition print is distinct from digital platform packages; the whole book exceeds this short route.

#### Try before choosing

Draw inlet/outlet normals and write the pressure-force vectors before the momentum equation.
Check your work: An inlet pressure pushes into the volume; an outlet pressure acts opposite its outward normal.

### Fluid Mechanics: A Very Short Introduction

Eric Lauga · 2022
Conceptual overview

Choose it when: Everyday examples help you recognize viscosity, pipe flow and dimensionless reasoning.
Use another route when: You need worked control-volume force balances and a full engineering exercise sequence.
Selected reading: Fluids, Viscosity, Pipes and Dimensions; Boundary Layers and Vortices later.
Limits and trade-offs: A short physical account is useful preparation, but it cannot supply the quantitative course by itself.

#### Try before choosing

Explain qualitatively why turning a jet can load a bend even if the flow rate stays constant.
Check your work: Direction of momentum matters. An explanation using only speed or volume rate is incomplete.

## Worked exercise: Steady flow still loads a turning bend

A horizontal control volume contains a bend. Water density is 1000 kg/m³. Uniform inlet area is 0.0020 m² with velocity (3.0,0) m/s and gauge pressure 20 kPa. One outlet has area 0.0010 m², velocity directed +y, and zero gauge pressure. Find its speed, momentum-flux change and net fluid-on-bend load.

Assumptions: Steady incompressible uniform-section model; momentum correction factors are one. Neglect weight and other body forces. Pressures are stipulated, not derived from lossless flow. All reported wall/support loads are net relative to uniform ambient pressure, whose effects cancel; x,y lie in the horizontal plane.

## Change an assumption: Opposite jets cancel momentum components, not flow

Replace the single outlet by two outlets, each area 0.00050 m², directed +y and −y, each at zero gauge pressure. Keep the regulated inlet area, speed, density and gauge pressure from the main case, and split the flow equally. Find the net fluid-on-fitting load with the same ambient and body-force assumptions.

## Before moving on

- Close mass and vector momentum balances with units.
- Identify pressure, wall and reaction forces separately.
- Explain why symmetric outlets cancel one load component without stopping the flow.

## Answer and interpretation

### Can I separate volume and mass flow rates?

For a uniform section, Q=AV has units m³/s and mass flow rate rho Q has units kg/s. Neither is the velocity vector.

### Can I track normals and reactions?

Pressure on a cut is −p n A. First calculate net wall-on-fluid action, then reverse it for the fluid-on-bend reaction under the same ambient convention.

### What is meant by steady?

The fluid stored in the control volume has no time-changing momentum, but inflow and outflow momentum flux may differ.

### Steady flow still loads a turning bend

1. Continuity gives Q=0.0020·3.0=0.0060 m³/s and mass flow rate 6.0 kg/s. Outlet speed is Q/0.0010=6.0 m/s, so its velocity is (0,6.0).
2. Net outgoing minus incoming momentum flux is 6\[(0,6)−(3,0)\]=(−18,36) N. The inlet gauge pressure contributes (20000·0.0020,0)=(40,0) N; outlet gauge contribution is zero.
3. Writing R+(40,0)=(−18,36) gives net wall-on-fluid action R=(−58,36) N. Reverse it: the net fluid-on-bend load is (58,−36) N.

Outlet speed 6.0 m/s; momentum-flux change (−18,36) N; net wall-on-fluid action (−58,36) N; net fluid-on-bend load (58,−36) N.

Test the result: The two reaction vectors are opposite. A support that balances this fluid load, with bend weight and other external loads neglected, supplies (−58,36) N under the same net ambient convention. Steady flow did not imply zero momentum-flux change.

### Change an assumption: Opposite jets cancel momentum components, not flow

1. Total Q remains 0.0060 m³/s. Each branch carries 0.0030 m³/s and 3.0 kg/s, with speed 0.0030/0.00050=6.0 m/s.
2. The outgoing momentum flux is 3(0,6)+3(0,−6)=(0,0) N. Subtract the incoming (18,0) N to obtain (−18,0) N. Zero outgoing vector sum does not mean zero outlet mass flow.
3. The pressure force remains (40,0) N. Thus R=(−18,0)−(40,0)=(−58,0) N and the net fluid-on-fitting load is (58,0) N.

The equal split removes the transverse load: net wall-on-fluid action (−58,0) N, net fluid-on-fitting load (58,0) N.

Test the result: Adding the magnitudes of the two outlet momentum fluxes would give a false transverse force. Both branches have nonzero kinetic flow; the cancellation concerns signed vector momentum. The fixed inlet pressure is a stated regulated condition, not a prediction that every redesigned fitting preserves it.

## Common mistakes

### Replacing vectors with speeds

Momentum flux needs signed velocity components, including when different outlets oppose one another.

### Dropping pressure forces

The change in momentum is the sum of all external actions, not just the wall reaction.

### Mixing absolute and gauge loads

Report the ambient convention and reverse the same net force when switching between wall-on-fluid and fluid-on-wall.
