Study route and exercise: University Reading List editorial project.

For a first financial-accounting course with arithmetic, percentages and signed changes. The fictional service business below uses a complete classroom rule packet, not a representation of current IFRS, US GAAP, tax law or a real reporting obligation. Tokens are invented and the exercise offers no financial or investment advice.

## Choose your starting point

- [ ] I need a free full reading spine
Use OpenStax Volume 1 to practise transactions, adjustments and statement links. Distinguish it from Volume 2 managerial accounting and from separately restricted instructor materials.

- [ ] Transactions arrive too quickly
Use Libby’s building-block approach to transaction analysis, keeping a running equation before combining adjustments. Match the selected eleventh International Student Edition.

- [ ] I want the equation to explain published reports
Use Weetman and Jubb for the progression from users’ information needs through equations, statements and interpretation. Separate this route from learning a specific current reporting standard.

## Compare the three books

### Principles of Accounting, Volume 1: Financial Accounting

Mitchell Franklin; Patty Graybeal; Dixon Cooper · 2019
Free accounting-cycle spine

Choose it when: You need a complete introductory text and repeated practice linking records and statements.
Use another route when: You want its 2019 examples to establish current legal, tax or reporting requirements.
Selected reading: Volume 1: named transaction-recording, adjusting-entry and financial-statement discussions. Follow the sequence rather than selecting a later ratio before the records are understood.
Limits and trade-offs: The official online book is free to read. Current online permissions and an older downloaded copy’s notice may differ; check the version used before reusing material. Learning the concepts does not require copying its exercises.

#### Try before choosing

Classify a customer prepayment, a supplied service and unused supplies under the rule packet below.
Check your work: A receipt is not automatically revenue; a payment is not automatically an expense.

### Financial Accounting

Robert Libby; Patricia Libby; Frank Hodge · 11 (International Student Edition) · 2023
Staged transaction-analysis spine

Choose it when: You want commercial case context with a gradual introduction to the accounting cycle.
Use another route when: You need a free complete text or assume every used copy includes working courseware.
Selected reading: Eleventh International Student Edition, ©2023, ISBN 9781265083922: transaction analysis, then adjusting entries and linked statements, matched by title.
Limits and trade-offs: Its focus-company and building-block design differs from a bare bookkeeping drill. Digital dashboards and Connect activities are product-specific, not an entitlement supplied by the print identifier.

#### Try before choosing

For each event, write the asset, liability and equity change before choosing account labels.
Check your work: The equation remains balanced after each event; an owner distribution is not silently included in operating expenses.

### Financial Accounting: An Introduction

Pauline Weetman; Darren Jubb · 9 · 2024
Equation-to-report interpretation spine

Choose it when: You want to understand why statements are structured as they are and how readers use them.
Use another route when: You expect a 2024 textbook to replace checking current standards or a jurisdiction-specific course.
Selected reading: Ninth edition, 2024, ISBN 9781292457062: chapters 3–4 for the equation/statements, 9 for service transactions; ratios follow after reconciliation.
Limits and trade-offs: The UK/international perspective and reporting context contrast with the other routes. The e-book identifier differs, and companion activities depend on the product.

#### Try before choosing

Explain how an unchanged cash balance could coexist with higher earned revenue and lower unearned revenue.
Check your work: Your explanation identifies the performance event and both sides of the entry, rather than using cash as the recognition rule.

## A six-step study plan

- [ ] Write the recognition packet

Selected reading: Your spine’s equation and accounting-cycle introduction.

What to do: Make an event-to-recognition table before entering numbers.

Check your work: State what makes a service earned and when supplies become an expense.

Your notes:

________________________________

- [ ] Trace cash separately

Selected reading: Transaction-analysis reading.

What to do: Record only cash receipts and payments in a cash ledger.

Check your work: Credit revenue and a noncash adjustment do not appear as cash movements.

Your notes:

________________________________

- [ ] Record performance and consumption

Selected reading: Adjusting-entry reading.

What to do: Split customer advance into earned and unearned parts, and supplies into used and unused parts.

Check your work: The split follows the stated quantities, not a desire to balance a total.

Your notes:

________________________________

- [ ] Build linked statements

Selected reading: Statement-preparation reading.

What to do: Prepare revenue/expense, ending equity and the statement of position.

Check your work: Profit flows to equity; a draw is recorded separately and each asset remains identifiable.

Your notes:

________________________________

- [ ] Reconcile an alternative cutoff fact

Selected reading: The original follow-up and service transactions.

What to do: Move only the prepayment date, preserving the performed work and stipulated unconditional receivable.

Check your work: Reconcile why profit can stay fixed while cash and the balance-sheet composition change.

Your notes:

________________________________

- [ ] Interpret without overclaiming

Selected reading: Weetman/Jubb interpretation or Libby’s decision context.

What to do: Write three sentences explaining profit, liquidity and the packet’s limits.

Check your work: A positive profit does not itself establish cash adequacy, business value or compliance with a real standard.

## Worked exercise: Original service business: cash is not the profit calculation

Opening cash and owner equity are each 100 tokens, with no other balances. During one month the business receives 90 for three equal 30-token sessions, performs two, earns 50 on a separate fully delivered credit job, buys supplies for 24 cash and uses 9, pays rent 20, and pays an owner draw 10. Prepare ending cash, revenue, expenses, profit, assets, liabilities and equity.

Assumptions: Recognize 30 revenue per session when performed; an advance for an unperformed session is a liability. The separate 50 job is earned and unconditionally receivable. Only consumed supplies and this month’s rent are expenses. The draw is a distribution, not an expense. No tax, depreciation, bad debt, interest, other items or opening liabilities exist.

Your notes:

________________________________

## Change an assumption: Changed payment date: same earnings, different assets

Change only the 90-token advance receipt: it will arrive next month instead. The same two sessions and separate credit job are performed this month. Stipulate that each performed session immediately gives an unconditional 30-token receivable; the remaining unperformed 30 is not unconditionally invoice-due. All other facts and rules remain.

## Before moving on

- I can classify every event using an explicit rule.
- I can reconcile cash, profit and ending equity without plugging unexplained totals.
- I can explain the changed payment date and the exact receivable assumption it needs.

## Answer and interpretation

### Which changes affect profit?

Under the packet, earned services create revenue and consumed supplies or rent create expenses. A contribution or distribution changes owner equity without becoming revenue or expense.

### What is a cutoff?

A reporting boundary that determines which performance, obligations and balances belong in this period. Payment date and performance date are distinct facts.

### What must reconcile?

Assets=liabilities+equity; closing equity=opening equity+profit−distributions here; ending cash=opening cash+cash inflows−cash outflows. A balanced equation alone does not prove correct classification.

### Original service business: cash is not the profit calculation

1. Cash ends at 100+90−24−20−10=136. The credit job adds no cash, and using supplies creates no additional payment.
2. Revenue is 2×30+50=110. Expenses are 9+20=29. Profit is 81. Unearned revenue remains 30; unused supplies are 24−9=15.
3. Assets are cash 136 + receivable 50 + supplies 15 =201. Ending equity is 100+81−10=171; liabilities 30 + equity 171 =201.
4. Cash increased 36 while profit was 81. These measure different things: the advance, credit work, unconsumed supplies and owner draw affect their reconciliation in different ways.

Cash 136; revenue 110; expenses 29; profit 81; assets 201; liabilities 30; equity 171. The three statement links reconcile under the packet.

Test the result: Check the cash ledger, the consumed/unused split and 201=30+171 independently. Merely forcing the final equation to balance could conceal a wrong revenue or expense label.

### Change an assumption: Changed payment date: same earnings, different assets

1. Without the 90 receipt, cash becomes 100−24−20−10=46. The earned two sessions create 60 receivable, added to the separate 50, so receivables total 110.
2. There is no received advance and no unconditional claim for the unperformed session, so there is no 30 liability or additional receivable for it. Supplies remain 15.
3. Revenue 110, expenses 29, profit 81 and equity 171 are unchanged. Assets 46+110+15=171 equal liabilities 0 + equity 171. Compared with the main case, cash falls 90, receivables rise 60 and liabilities fall 30.

Cash 46, receivables 110, supplies 15, assets 171, liabilities 0, equity 171; profit remains 81. Changing collection timing did not change performed work.

Test the result: Check 171=0+171 and the net asset fall 30 against the liability fall 30. If the full 90 were already unconditionally billed, that would be different contractual facts and would require a different balance treatment.

## Common mistakes

### Receipt equals revenue

A prepayment may fund later work; the packet recognizes performance separately.

### Balanced means correct

Misclassification can leave both sides equal. Recheck event meaning, period and account.

### Owner draw treated as expense

The draw reduces equity and cash; it does not reduce this packet’s operating profit.
